Introduction

Welcome to the Feefo Knowledge Base article on how to check the eligibility of your site for organic stars and verify the correctness of implemented schema using Google's Rich Result Test Tool. This tool, introduced in 2020 to replace the Structured Data Testing Tool, allows you to test if your website qualifies for rich snippets, providing valuable insights into the appearance of your search results. In this article, we will explore how to use the Rich Result Test Tool for testing both URLs and code to ensure accurate schema implementation.

The tool offers you two options to test the URL or the Code.

Testing from URL

To check if your site is eligible for organic stars and validate implemented schema using the Rich Result Test Tool, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Rich Result Test Tool.
  2. Enter your website's URL into the provided field.
  3. Click on 'Test URL' to view your test results, including any potential warnings and errors detected by the tool.
  4. From the test results view, you have two options:
    • Preview SERP Results: This allows you to preview how your page will appear in the search engine results page (SERP).
    • View Rendered HTML: By selecting this option, you can view the rendered HTML code on the right-hand side.

You cannot modify the code in this view. If you want to preview any changes before implementing them, you need to copy the code and perform a code test, as explained below.

Testing Code

To test the correctness of your implemented schema using the Rich Result Test Tool, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Rich Result Test Tool.
  2. Select the 'Code' option.
  3. Enter your schema code into the provided field.
  4. Click on 'Test Code' to see your test results.

In this view, you can manipulate the code on the left-hand side and preview the changes on the right-hand side. Remember to run the test again after making any code changes to see the updated results.

We strongly recommend testing your code using the Googlebot smartphone option, as Google announced mobile-first indexing for the entire web on March 5th, 2020. This ensures that your website is optimised for mobile devices, which is crucial for SEO and rich snippet visibility.

Conclusion

Google's Rich Result Test Tool is a valuable resource to check the eligibility of your website for organic stars and validate the correctness of implemented schema. By testing from the URL or code, you can ensure that your search results stand out with rich snippets, providing essential information to users and potentially increasing your Click-through Rate (CTR). Regularly using this tool will help you maintain an enhanced appearance in the search engine results pages (SERPs) and stay in line with Google's mobile-first indexing for improved SEO performance.
